TOP 5 BEST GAME SEQUELS
By Dieter Englert
NUMBER 5!
Mass Effect 2
The first Mass Effect is a great game, no question, which is why it’s so impressive that Bioware managed to top it in almost every conceivable way. Gone were the dry repetitive side-missions, replaced with more story driven and consequential affairs, that were just as compelling as the main plot.
Combat also received a massive overhaul, in the first game combat was merely tolerated in order to continue to story, not so in Mass Effect 2. Shooting felt fast and fluid, something to be enjoyed on its own merit, while offering more replay value to a game that was already bursting with reasons to visit it again and again.
NUMBER 4!
Borderlands 2
Borderlands managed to gain a good amount of fans with its first outing back in 2009, but it failed to break through into the realm of Triple A status due to a lack of variety and bland characters. Luckily Gearbox Software knew exactly this and set about addressing these issues in a major way with the follow up. Fantastic writing brought the world of Panadora to life and the huge selection of enemies to blast through, ensured the substantial 20-30 hours needed to complete the game felt far less of a drag. It didn’t quite live up to its promise of a bazillion guns but we’ll let them off, this time.
NUMBER 3!
Red Dead Redemption
Red Dead Redemption didn’t break cover until 2009, when it did the influence of certain other Rockstar franchise was clear to see. Far more than just Grand Theft Auto IV on horses though, Rockstar described Red Dead as “more ambitious than GTA IV” and “the ultimate open world game”. Whether it lived up to those bold statements is up for debate, but what isn’t questionable, is the gigantic leap made in this sequel.
NUMBER 2!
Uncharted 2
Naughty Dog’s first foray onto the PS3 raised the bar for presentation in videogames, but was criticized for lacking any new ideas of its own.
While it’s true Uncharted 2 borrowed numerous elements from other games, it managed to stitch them altogether seamlessly, creating an experience that felt unlike anything gamers had experience before. Naughty Dog had proved it is possible to be a master of all trades, producing what many people regard as the best game of the current generation.
NUMBER 1!!!
Assassin's Creed 2The first Assassin’s Creed game was an interesting, ambitious but ultimately a flawed experience, the concept was fantastic but the unlike Altair, Ubisoft didn’t quite nail the execution. In truth the improvements necessary to take Assassin’s Creed 2 into blockbuster territory were obvious.

Arguably the real star of the second game wasn’t the improved gameplay, story, or protagonist, but the time period of Renaissance Italy. Vibrant and colourful it may not have been able to sustain three outings but first time around, it was the final piece of the brilliant Assassin’s Creed 2 puzzle.
